PASSIONE PER LA CULTURA

The Palio (‘banner') is a spectacular horserace dated since 1287 in the heart of Siena between 17 neighborhoods (contrade) all within the city walls.

This race is held twice a year at 2nd of July (Palio di Provenzano) and 16th of August (Palio dell'Assunta). The Palio is only open for 10 contrades. Seven contrades are in because they did not compete the last edition. The other three are selected by drawn.

Two days before the actual race the contrades have their qualifications (tratta dei cavalli) to select their horses. After the assignment the horse can’t be changed even in the event of injury.

Over 50.000 spectators attend the world’s most spectacular horse race.
